The Greeks and Romans made significant advancements in wine production, developing techniques such as pruning vines and using barrels for aging.

During the Middle Ages, wine became a symbol of wealth and power in European society and winemaking became a prestigious enterprise for the wealthy. Monks played a significant role in preserving the art of winemaking during this time, and some of the oldest and most renowned wineries in the world were founded by monks.

The 19th century marked a turning point in the history of winemaking with the development of new winemaking technologies that greatly improved the efficiency and consistency of production. Commercial wineries began to emerge, and wine became a mass-produced product.
